In April 2016, IANGEL shared news about Mozn Hassan, founder and director of Nazra for Feminist Studies (www.nazra.org), who has been charged in Egypt’s Foreign Funding case. Hassan, winner of the Global Fund for Women’s 2013 Charlotte Bunch Human Rights Defender Award, is a victim of a recent crackdown on human rights in Egypt.

This September 22, Mozn Hassan was the recipient of the prestigious 2016 Right Livelihood Award, widely referred to as the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’. These awards uphold fundamental human rights and values in the face of war and repression.  Mozn Hassan and Nazra for Feminist Studies were recognized “for asserting the equality and rights of women in circumstances where they are subject to ongoing violence, abuse, and discrimination.”

Despite pressure from the international human rights community, Mozn Hassan continues to face persecution in Egypt.  Nazra has released a petition that calls on the government:

● To immediately lift all arbitrary and unduly restrictive measures that prevent Mozn Hassan and other WHRDs from conducting their human rights advocacy

● To stop imposing travel bans in an attempt to destabilize legitimate human rights advocacy

● Provide an enabling environment for all women human rights defenders and activists in Egypt to exercise their rights guaranteed under the Egyptian Constitution and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Egypt is a party.
