Landmark case may set precedent for Colombian assault survivors
In 2000, Colombian journalist and human rights defender Jineth Bedoya Lima was abducted, tortured and raped while working on a news report involving a prison massacre. After years of inaction, a petition was filed alleging Colombia’s international responsibility for the violation of several rights included in the American Convention of Human Rights. The “Manuela” case: El Salvador’s abortion laws under scrutiny
In 2008, Manuela suffered an obstetric emergency and was rushed to the hospital, where she was confronted by hostile physicians that accused her of self-inducing an illegal abortion. The Trial Court convicted Manuela and sentenced her to 30 years in prison for aggravated murder. Learn more about Manuela’s story.
