Juli King is a law student at UC Davis School of Law who has worked as an legal extern at IANGEL. This past summer, between her 2nd and 3rd years of law school, Juli traveled to Ghana to pursue her interests in human rights work by working with Challenging Heights. Juli reports about her experience from Ghana:

“Challenging Heights is an anti-trafficking, anti-slavery, children’s rights NGO located in Winneba, Ghana. Inspired by the president and founder’s own experience of being trafficked and enslaved as a child, the organization serves communities from which children are trafficked, with a strategic goal of ending child trafficking in the fishing industry in Ghana in five years and ending child slavery in the fishing industry in Ghana in ten years.

“As an intern with Challenging Heights, I had the privilege of serving the Challenging Heights community, by conducting a research study to re-design and update the agency’s Youth Empowerment Program to target high demand industries and apprenticeships and to encourage girls to enter non-traditional fields. But really, it is the passionate staff at Challenging Heights that does the life-saving and life changing work of rescuing, rehabilitating and reintegrating children, providing economic opportunities for women and supporting youth in pursuing bright
futures.

“I’m so lucky to have had the opportunity to work for both Challenging Heights and IANGEL and to be inspired by their passionate and dedicated staff who tirelessly advocate for the rights of the communities they serve.”
