Challenges in Gender Equity:  

Contemporary Tibetan Leadership & Conflict Societies in South Asia

featuring Dr. Bhumo Tsering and Krishanti Dharmaraj

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014 – The International Action Network for Gender Equity & Law (IANGEL) and ACHA-Himalayan Sisterhood co-hosted a presentation by Dr. Bhumo Tsering and Ms. Krishanti Dharmaraj on gender equity challenges in contemporary Tibetan leadership and conflict societies in South Asia.

During our conversation we learned about the situation for women of Tibet, and how Dr. Tsering’s organization, the Tibetan Women’s Association, has been working to change that. Krishanti Dharmaraj discussed the role of culture in conflict and how we must work to become conscious leaders.

SPEAKERS: 
Dr. Bhumo Tsering is the Principal of the Dalai Lama Institute for Higher Education in Bangalore and an elected parliamentarian in the Assembly of Tibetan Parliament in Exile in India. Dr. Tsering is the 2012 recipient of the Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellowship awarded by the National Endowment for Democracy in DC, where she researched gender equity in contemporary Tibetan leadership in exile. Dr. Tsering served as the President of Tibetan Women’s Association from 2003 to 2009. From 2010 to 2012, she served as the Coordinator of Science Meets Dharma. Dr. Tsering received her Ph.D. from University of Virginia in 2001. She lives in India.

Krishanti Dharmaraj is the Executive Director of International Action Network for Gender Equity and Law (IANGEL) in Berkeley, Co-founder of the Women’s Institute for Leadership Development (WILD for Human Rights) at UC Berkeley and Sri Lanka Children’s Fund. With Krishanti’s leadership San Francisco became the first U.S. city to pass legislation implementing the UN Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women [CEDAW]. Recipient of numerous awards, Krishanti currently serves as a Trustee of the North East Women’s Network in Sri Lanka and is on the Advisory Boards of South Asia Democracy Watch and Machik, an organization enhancing the wellbeing of Tibetans in Tibet. Krishanti was also the Western Regional Spokesperson for Amnesty International USA.
