On December 14, 2022, the brave women leading a global movement for change in Iran scored an historic victory: the Member States voted to remove the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) from the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), based on IRI’s appalling record on women’s rights. We celebrate this pivotal moment in the struggle for human rights for women and girls everywhere.

Since the tragic death of 22 year old Mahsa Jina Amini at the hands of Iran’s Morality Police, many protesters—including children—have been killed by Iranian authorities. Under Iran’s Islamic Penal Code, Iranian women’s rights have been severely restricted for decades. Iran’s appalling record on women’s rights and its inhumane crackdown on protesters are unacceptable and warrant Iran’s immediate removal from the CSW.

IANGEL was proud to join the global advocacy urging the removal of the IRI from the CSW, and we rejoice with human rights advocates worldwide. Many thanks to all in our network who joined this effort to amplify the voices of Iranians demanding freedom. Woman. Life. Freedom.
