December 2022

Since taking control of Afghanistan in August of 2021, the Taliban have been violating international law with a series of edicts that deprive women and girls of their basic human rights. They excluded girls above 6th grade from education, a cruel blow to the hopes and dreams of millions. In response, some teachers have continued to teach these young women anyway, defying the ban and providing education in dark basements and old buildings. Since August of 2022, IANGEL has been working with two young teachers in Kabul, to provide connection, advocacy, and direct support for their work.

In December of 2022, the Taliban took further unconscionable steps against Afghanistan’s female population, issuing edicts to exclude women from universities, and to exclude them from working in NGOs.

Again, brave women in Afghanistan – including teachers that IANGEL is working with – have stood up to protest these latest assaults on the human rights of women and girls in Afghanistan. At their request, we are amplifying their voices, and publicizing their protests to the international community, as they call out for Woman.Education.Freedom, and Woman.Life.Freedom.

The international community has an obligation to fight the new gender apartheid in Afghanistan.1 IANGEL is committed to this fight, with resources, advocacy, and engagement.  We cannot allow the Taliban to continue to crush the hopes and dreams of Afghan women and girls. Please support this work.
